Local Area
Barnard Castle lies on the River Tees and is a gateway to the surrounding hills and natural beauty of the Northern Pennines. Particular places of interest in the town itself are Barnard Castle, The Bowes Museum, The Witham Hall, Egglestone Abbey and The Market Cross to name but a few. Barnard Castle now holds an undisputed reputation for its selection of high quality Antique shops for your perusal.
Lying in the north west, the valley of the Upper Tees leads up through Middleton in Teesdale, taking in High Force and Cauldron Snout Waterfalls. Both the Pennine Way and Teesdale Way walking routes pass through the village of Middleton as well as the challenging cycle routes along these ways. The Tees Railway Path leads walkers and cyclists alike through the stunning countryside and such picturesque villages as Middleton, Lonton, Mickleton, Romaldkirk, Cotherstone and Lartington. Campsites, caravan parks, self catering cottages, bed and breakfast and hotels are all found in abundance in the area too.
